In its dedication to providing integrated energy and environmental services, CCS Income Trust plans to become the global leader of its market. With a goal of “maximizing opportunities and value” for its clients, CCS Income Trust has developed a wide range of integrated energy and environmental services. In serving global customers in the energy and environmental industries, the company's capabilities include cavern disposal of oil by-products, engineered landfill designs, bio-remediation treatments, recovery and marketing of crude oil, and the recycling and processing of metals purchased or recovered through waste management services. The company notes, however, that it couldn't deliver its quality services without the expertise and dedication of its people. “We have the greatest impact with our services when we focus on building leadership at all levels,” says Dave Werklund, president, CEO and founder. “We want everyone in our organization to take ownership in all we do, and our people are proud to do that. They stay aligned with the corporate objectives and we provide them with the tools they need to do their work.
“It is our people that make everything happen,” he continues. “This is definitely a people-first company. If you look after people, they will look after the interests of your company.”
Werklund founded CCS in 1984 as Canadian Crude Separators Inc. He explains that since its inception, the company has focused on its core business of providing environmental and midstream energy services to the oil and gas industry. Based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, CCS's services include engineering, regulatory compliance, well servicing and facility decommissioning.
The company's operations include 11 offices, 140 rigs, 21 customer service facilities, an industrial wastewater treatment plant, three transfer stations, two processing facilities and two salt caverns for the disposal and treatment of oil and gas exploration and production wastes. CCS serves Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, Canada, as well as the U.S. Gulf Coast region of Louisiana. “We have a very unique service model,” Werklund says. “We are set up in different geographic areas and we offer multiple services in each area. “It is important to us that we continuously grow and look for other integrated services to add to our operation.” The company explains it is organized to meet its goals with its four divisions, and its dedication to its mission helps it remain on target.
“In more than two decades, CCS Income Trust has become a preeminent provider of waste management and environmental solutions for the energy sector,” CCS says. “Our integrity is present in the guiding principles that drive our business and which include transparency of leadership and accountability. We deliver on our commitments to customers and unit holders. Our strong corporate governance strengthens our relationship with investors. Most importantly, our vision, mission and core values are an integral component of all we do.”
CCS provides its integrated energy and environmental services through four major divisions: CCS Energy Services provides essential and differentiated oil and gas services to upstream oil and gas producers. With customer service facilities in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Louisiana, the company says, CCS Energy Services has become the leader in treatment, recovery and disposal of petroleum by-products. This division's services include emulsion treatment, crude oil terminating, tank cleaning, waste processing, deep well disposal and cavern disposal. CCS Energy Marketing was created in October 2004 to respond to the opportunity to maximize the return on the marketing of recovered crude oil.
The company explains this division extracts additional value and operating margin on waste and recovered oil volumes from the Energy Services facilities. It also captures the incremental value created through the marketing chain with lease purchases; single shipper/optimization; and bulk purchase revenue streams.
HAZCO Environmental Services is an industry leader providing a wide range of specialized services including site remediation, decommissioning, waste services, environmental construction, environmental technologies, emergency response and sulphur services. The company notes this division also operates a network of engineered landfills, bioremediation facilities and hazardous waste transfer stations that span western Canada.
HAZCO provides its services throughout Canada, Peru and select services in the United States and other international markets. n Concord Well Servicing owns and operates 140 service rigs, forming one of the most modern fleets in the Canadian oil and natural gas sector, the company says. Its fleet provides oil and gas well completion, maintenance, workover and abandonment services. CCS says this division also offers advanced technologies such as directional and horizontal re-entries. Concord's fleet is based in strategically located offices convenient to producing areas in Alberta, northeastern British Columbia and the Northwest Territories.
“Having extensive, integrated energy services is important to us, and we are always looking to add to our service model through acquisition,” Werklund says. “HAZCO excels in engineering landfills, and when they came on board, they provided more value and synergies to our clients, as well as site remediation services.”
Investing in Growth and People CCS Income Trust's most recent acquisition is Lionhead Engineering & Consulting. Also headquartered in Calgary, Lionhead specializes in providing engineering and project management services for the final phase of the oilfield lifecycle. This includes well and pipeline abandonment, facility decommissioning, inactive well management and regulatory compliance services.
“Lionhead is a highly disciplined group of well, pipeline and facility abandonment experts with a long-standing reputation and a dedicated team of highly qualified engineers,” Werklund said in a statement. “This acquisition demonstrates our strategic approach to growth. “We can leverage existing business we already own and operate. Our site remediation, well servicing, landfill services and TRD facilities are an integral component to managing the abandonment process.” CCS explains Lionhead's expertise in regulatory compliance is a valuable asset for its customers because those regulations are evolving and becoming more stringent. Lionhead has built its business helping clients manage the regulatory process, CCS notes.
“Lionhead has extensive experience in well abandonment services, which is going to enhance our operations because more than 8,000 wells need abandonment every year,” Werklund explains. “All of Lionhead's services will be useful for the work we do onsite.”
Werklund says the company's integrated services are important in serving customers in the best possible way. The company's acquisitions, he says, help CCS to meet its goal of ensuring the “integrity of the environment” and uphold its commitments to customers and stakeholders.
“Our wide range of solutions are integral in providing customers with a complete service package,” he says. “Not long ago, we were commissioned to perform a demolition of a gas plant and the abandonment of its pipelines and suspended wells. Our scrap metal division - HMI - allowed us to get the maximum value of the metal from the demolition and Lionhead Engineering was integral in executing all the services in one package.”
Maximizing Market Potential In its mission to become the global leader in the environmental and energy service sectors and be the first-choice provider of safe, environmentally responsible services, CCS plans to maximize market potential and grow organically, geographically and through complementary acquisitions.
“We will accomplish our goals through our core values of positive image, productivity through the right people, trusting employee relationships, superior service, superior financial performance and growth, and innovation,” CCS says. The company also plans to continue to develop in under-serviced regions in Canada, the United States and internationally. Werklund says the company will continue to pursue long-term business opportunities, which will allow CCS to grow into new frontiers. He believes the company has the necessary tools to meet all of its goals.
“We have an outstanding reputation with more than 23 years in the business,” he says. “We are well-established, have a reputation of integrity and are extremely service-oriented. All of this is derived from the commitment of our people - nothing can surpass the strength our people add to this organization.
“My philosophy is that the best companies trust their people and create the best environments for them to succeed,” he continues. “The best companies create leaders in every level of the organization. CCS is reaping the rewards of empowering an extremely talented group of people toward a common vision. Leadership defines our approach and our results in every aspect of our business. “The important area of leadership rests in how we invest it - and believe in - our people. CCS is in the service business. Our goal - our mandate - is to satisfy the business needs of our customers for best-in-class, world-class service.” |
